The Venango County SEC is the only SEC that currently focuses on marking abandoned oil and wells on public land. The project, also known as the Orphaned Wells Project, started in 2003 in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and the group has already located approximately 700 abandoned wells.
While the group focuses mainly on finding the abandoned wells, they also monitor some streams for water quality. They also participate in a variety of educational programs such as making presentations to local civic groups and working with students from 3rd through 12th grades. The Venango County SEC is sponsored by the Venango County Conservation District and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
The Venango SEC group operates separate from the rest of the Pennsylvania Senior Corps and also maintains a separate website which can be accessed at http://vpasec.org/ .
