Philadelphia - Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education SEC

For over a decade a small, dedicated group of volunteers from The Schuylkill Center have been monitoring local stream sites. They have monitored a tributary of the Wissahickon Creek near Wise’s Mill Road and another tributary of the Wissahickon Creek at Bell’s Mill Road. The SEC volunteers have also trained students as a Junior Environment Corps to monitor two sites along the Wissahickon Creek and one along the Schuylkill River after the Wissahickon joined it.

Additionally, the group has gathered samples along the Wissahickon Creek for the DEP which were analyzed by laboratories for coliform as related to recreational stream sites. Recently, the group began monitoring Green Tree Run which flows into the Schuylkill River. This is being done in response to a request from local community groups concerned about the impact of potential development on the watershed.

Environmental Education is also a focus of the SCEE group. SEC volunteers help with our Envirothon competition for high school students in Philadelphia County and volunteer for many of the center’s public events. The SEC volunteers with the center feel passionate about their role as stewards of the environment.
