Indiana County SEC

Are you interested in learning more about the water that flows through our Indiana County creeks and rivers and learning how to protect and improve our water? Are you interested in other projects such as - planting trees, road and stream side cleanups, Marcellus Shale monitoring, working with students to broaden their knowledge about our environment? If so, consider attending an Indiana County SEC meeting.

Our major programs consist of:

  • Water Sampling – The amount of sites we monitor varies. We continue to monitor some of our original sites, do AMD monitoring of treatment systems for the DEP, and conduct Bacterial monitoring for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP).

  • Marcellus Shale Monitoring – In Indiana County, Marcellus Shale Drilling is becoming more active. We work closely with Evergreen Conservancy, Ken Sink Trout Unlimited, StreamTeam and the PaDEP in identifying sites to monitor that may be affected by Marcellus Shale Drilling.

  • Education –We conduct educational programs on water quality in local schools as swell as home-schooled student groups.

  • Training – Our members are encouraged to attend trainings when offered, and we update our members on current monitoring policies.

  • Roadside Cleanups – Our volunteers are active in planning and conducting stream and roadside cleanups.

If any of the above strikes your fancy, we meet the second Wednesday of each month at 9:00 am - second floor of the Senior Center. We would really enjoy meeting you. Contact us for additional information.
