The Centre County SEC has been water monitoring since 2001. The group currently has over fifty members that are divided into thirteen teams monitoring approximately forty locations in Centre County.
In addition to monitoring for baseline data, the Centre County SEC has two teams water sampling water in the Marcellus Shale area of Centre County in cooperation with a research project by Lock Haven University. In conjunction with their local sponsor the ClearWater Conservancy, The Centre County SEC supports a temporary moratorium on Marcellus Shale drilling on public lands until a full and cumulative scientific analysis is complete.
One newer Centre County SEC team is doing post-improvement monitoring of the streams on land with recent tree plantings by Penn State students.
